Copying or moving items
If you have an Exchange archive or an Internet Mail archive, you may be able to copy or move the items in it from one mailbox folder to another. You may also be able to copy or move the items to a folder in a different archive altogether. You can copy or move the items using the Choose Folder option or the drag-and-drop operation.
Note:
Your administrator must configure Enterprise Vault Search to let you copy or move items.
When you copy or move an archived item between folders or archives, you need to know the factors that may determine the item's restore location and retention category.
Table: What you need to be aware of when you copy or move items
If you do this | This happens | Example |
---|---|---|
Move an item from one archive folder to another and then restore the item to the mailbox using the or > > option. | Enterprise Vault restores the item to the mailbox folder that corresponds to the item's current location in the archive. | Suppose that Enterprise Vault archives an item from your Inbox, and you move the item to the Drafts folder in your archive. When you later choose to restore the item, Enterprise Vault restores it to the Drafts folder rather than the Inbox folder. |
Move an item from one folder to another within the same archive, and different retention categories are set for the two folders. | Depending on how your administrator has set up Enterprise Vault, the moved item either:
| Suppose that the retention period for the source folder is five years and that of the target folder is seven years. Enterprise Vault either keeps the five-year retention period or gives the moved item the retention category that corresponds to the seven-year retention period. |
Move an item from one archive to another. | The moved item inherits the retention category of the target archive folder. The modified date of the item changes but its archived date does not. The date on which the item's retention period expires depends on how your administrator has configured the new retention category. | Suppose that the retention period for the source archive is five years, and that of the target folder is seven years. Also, suppose that your administrator has set the target folder's retention period to be based on the archived date. An item that Enterprise Vault added to the source archive one year ago expires in four years if it is left in the source archive. On the other hand, the same item expires in six years if you move it to the target archive. If the item's retention period is based on the modified date, the expiry date of the item is set to seven years when you move it to the target folder. |
Copy an item from one folder to another within the same archive, or to a folder in another archive, and different retention categories are set for the two folders. | Enterprise Vault assigns a new retention category to the item. If your administrator has designated that the target folder is a retention folder, this will apply the new retention category to the item. Otherwise, the settings that your administrator has chosen elsewhere in Enterprise Vault determine what the new retention category is. | Suppose that the retention period for the source folder is five years, and you copy the item to a retention folder that imposes a seven-year retention period. Enterprise Vault gives the copied item the retention category that corresponds to the seven-year retention period. |
