Configuring storage tiers

A storage tier is a category of storage which reflects its typical operating cost, including factors such as hardware type, availability, backup, administration and data centre. Different storage tiers can assigned to different storage devices. The following are examples of storage tiers:

  • Storage Area Network (expensive)

  • Direct attached Storage (medium cost)

  • Network Attached Storage (cheap)

  • Cloud (very cheap)

Assigning storage tiers to your storage helps you visualise and analyse what you are spending on information in your organization. It also enables you to optimize the use of the most expensive storage so that it is used where it is really needed.

An Information Map global setting allows you to define storage tiers, the costs associated with them, and the default tier for the purpose of calculating costs. Each storage tier will have a cost per terabyte, per year associated with it. The Information Fabric technology platform uses the assigned storage tiers to calculate the approximate storage costs for the data in the currently filtered data set. The cost of information is displayed on the filters on the summary panel on the Dashboard and detailed list views of theInformation Map application. On smaller screens where displaying both size and cost information is not possible, you can toggle to choose between displaying size information or cost information.

The displayed cost of information works seamlessly with the existing filters, enabling you to see, for example, the cost of your stale email data.

Keep the following points in mind before you assign storage tiers and the costs associated with each tier:

  • You can define up to 10 storage tiers.

  • You must define a default storage tier, which is used for any storage which has no other tier assigned.

To configure storage tiers

  1. In Information Map, click Administration > Global Settings.
  2. Click Storage Tiers and Costs.
  3. Click Display cost of Information in the Information Map to enable the display of cost on the Dashboard and the list views to all your users.
  4. Select the currency in which you want to display the cost of information.

The currency setting applies to all users and all locations. Information Map does not let you define different currencies for different users or locations.

  5. Enter the name of the storage tier and the cost per terabyte of data that you want to associate with the respective tier.

Set the cost for any storage tier that is not required to 0 and label it appropriately (for example, Not used). This label appears when you select a storage tier to assign to storage.

  6. Click Save to save the settings.

The configured storage tiers are available for selection on the Locations, Content Sources, and Container views.
