Information Map architecture
The architecture comprises of various entities that are configured at the on-premises and the cloud sites.
Information Map uses a shareable framework known as the Connector Framework for executing the discovery and control jobs against plug-able data stores.
The Connector Framework (CF) is an extensible and shareable framework of services that executes the following tasks:
Store the information about the data stores, credentials and their scanning schedule.
Connect to the data stores, discovers and records the data locations, and data store hierarchy.
Schedule tasks such as scanning of the data stores and collection of metadata on the items that are discovered. The results of the scan are stored on a shared storage.
Perform differentials and uploads (transfers) the metadata to Information Map after performing the differentials for analysis and geographical visualization.
Information Map provides visibility into various on-premises and cloud content sources to enable you do manage your data in a consolidated manner. You must use the Veritas Connection Center console, which is an integrated and secure solution to configure contetn sources that you want to discover and scan. For more information, see Veritas Connection Center Help.
The Information Map Agent facilitates the collection of metadata from NetBackup catalogs and other content sources and uploads it to the Information Fabric technology platform. The Agent periodically fetches the metadata from the most recent full backup and subsequent incremental and full backups from the content sources. It then securely uploads a subset of the collected metadata using TLS to Information Fabric which is hosted in the Veritas cloud.
In your data centers, the NetBackup software or appliances protect the files and folders on your file servers. The metadata pertaining to these files and folders is stored in the catalog of your NetBackup master server(s). Using NetBackup as the source of metadata has the benefit of not requiring additional scans of your file servers and allows the Agent to collect data efficiently, with minimum impact on your front-end application. It also provides an efficient way of gathering information from an organization's primary content sources.
The Agent fetches this information for the following type of NetBackup policies:
Standard
MS-Windows
NDMP
VMware
Hyper-V
For more information about NetBackup and NetBackup policies, see the Veritas NetBackup documentation.
For the NetBackup and Amazon S3 content sources, the schedule for uploading the metadata is controlled using the
> within Information Map. For the other supported content sources the metadata collection and upload schedule is configured when you add the content sources in Veritas Connection Center. Uploaded information is updated within 24 hours.Information Fabric is a highly-available, scalable, secure technology platform which stores the item metadata that is uploaded by the Information Map Agent and the Veritas-managed cloud agent . This can be many billions of rows of data. Periodically (typically daily) it analyses this data to generate manageable summaries which can be queried interactively by applications. All customer data that is stored in Information Fabric is encrypted using a key which is unique to each customer, ensuring both strong security and clear segregation.
The Information Map application is served from the Veritas Technology platform and provides a highly interactive user interface which runs within your web browser. There are two parts to the Information Map application:
Workspace
The Information Map Workspace is an interactive information visualization and analysis application which lets you visualize and analyze the data within your data centers. It helps you improve the understanding and governance of information across your organization. It presents data from the Information Fabric's summary datastore. When using the Information Map, you should be aware that the summarized information can be at least a day old.
Administration
The Administration portal provides a centralized place to configure and manage your information in Information Fabric. For example, you configure access permissions for your users and the collection of metadata by the Information Map Agent in the Administration portal.
For information about creating and managing connections (content sources) other than NetBackup and Amazon S3, see Veritas Connection Center Help.
