Running a simple search

The simple search feature lets you find the items that contain specific words, numbers, or phrases.

To run a simple search

  1. If advanced search is open, click Simple to open the simple search.
  2. Select the archive or folder in which you want to run the search in one of the following ways:
    • In the sidebar, select the archive or folder.

    • Click the down arrow in the search pane and then click Choose Folder.

Down arrow in the search pane

The Select Archive or Folders dialog box opens where you can specify one or more folders or archives in which to search.

  3. In the search box, enter the text that you want to search for.

A list of search suggestions appears as you type.

  4. Select the search suggestions that you need for the search and type the rest of the query.

When you select a search suggestion from the list, Enterprise Vault Search updates the search results.

    Note the following:

    • Enterprise Vault Search is not case-sensitive. A search for report also finds Report and REPORT.

    • If you type two or more words, the search returns only messages that contain them all. To search for a phrase, enclose it in double quotation marks (").

    • Enterprise Vault Search finds occurrences of a complete word or phrase only. For example, a search for enter does not find entertain.

    • Type an asterisk (*) to represent any number of characters, or a question mark (?) to represent any single character. For example, a search for enter* finds entertain. The asterisk and the question mark are known as wildcard characters. You must use two question mark wildcards (??) to search for a character that is formed by the combining together of two others, such as æ or œ.

    • You can construct complex queries that include query syntax (for example, contents:sales subject:report) and Boolean operators (for example, stock NOT price).

    • You can clear the search box by clicking the × (Return to default search) icon.

  5. Click Submit search (the magnifying glass icon) or press Enter.

The results pane displays the results of the search.
