Configuring the new SMTP Archiving feature

This section summarizes the steps needed to perform basic configuration of SMTP Archiving. For detailed instructions, see the Setting up SMTP Archiving guide on the Enterprise Vault media.

To configure the new SMTP Archiving feature

  1. Open the Enterprise Vault Administration Console.
  2. If the existing destination archive that was used by the legacy solution is a supported type, then you can continue to use this archive in your new environment. Alternatively, you can create one or more new archives for each target address. If you want to use a new archive, you can create this in the required archive type container under Archives before continuing. In Enterprise Vault 12.3 and later, you can create new SMTP archives in the new SMTP target wizard.
  3. When you attempt to add an SMTP target, the SMTP Archiving configuration wizard starts. Expand Targets > SMTP.

In Enterprise Vault 12.2 and earlier, right-click the SMTP container, and select New > Target Email Address.

In Enterprise Vault 12.3 and later, right-click Manual targets, and select New > Target email address.

The configuration wizard for Enterprise Vault SMTP servers and SMTP Archiving starts.

  4. Provide the SMTP port number that the Enterprise Vault SMTP servers are to use. By default the server uses port 25. If the legacy solution used the same port for Microsoft SMTP service, change the port for Microsoft SMTP service before continuing.
  5. If required, change the authentication that is used by the Enterprise Vault SMTP servers, and then click Next.
  6. If the SMTP server is to support encrypted connections, import the required security certificate for the Enterprise Vault SMTP servers, and then click Next. For information on obtaining SSL/TLS certificates, see Setting up SMTP Archiving.
  7. When you click Finish on the summary page, the New SMTP target wizard starts.
  8. Enter as the target email address the SMTP routing address which was used to send SMTP email to the legacy solution.
  9. For now, leave the type of journaling option set to SMTP Journaling. Later you can configure the target address for SMTP Group Journaling, if required.
  10. Ensure that the check box, Archive messages sent from or received by this SMTP address, is selected to enable the target address for archiving. After you create the target, this option is also available in the target properties.
  11. In Enterprise Vault 12.2 and earlier, select an existing archive for the SMTP message files. In Enterprise Vault 12.3 and later, you can use Add to select one or more existing archives for the target, or New to create new SMTP archives.

    Click Next.

  12. Select the SMTP policy and retention settings for the archived data, and then click Next.
  13. Click Finish.
  14. A dialog asks if you want to create an SMTP Archiving task. Click Yes to create an SMTP Archiving task.
  15. Click Next on the introductory page. On the next page select the check box next to the Enterprise Vault server on which you want to create the task.

Click the browse button, "", to select the SMTP holding folder for the task. The folder should be on the local drive. Do not select the SMTP holding area that was used by the legacy solution.

  16. Click Next to view the summary page, and then click Finish.
