Problem

How to change a computer name with Backup Exec 2014 and later.

When changing a computer/server name, backup jobs should be created again with a new computer/server name according to the server centric configuration. The step is described below.

A) Changing a Backup Exec server name (a.k.a Media Server)

1. Changing a Standalone Backup Exec Server name

i. When a deduplication device is used, disable Backup Exec Ransomware Resilience feature (a.k.a Lockdown.) See  100049101.  
ii. Change the computer name of the operating system.
iii. Restart the server.
iv. When a deduplication device is used, restart Backup Exec services again after the start up is completed.
v. When a deduplication device is used, enable the Backup Exec Ransomware Resilience feature.
vi. To protect the Backup Exec server, create backup jobs with the new computer name.
vii. Hold or delete scheduled backup jobs with the previous computer name.
viii. (Optional) Move the previous computer name to Retired Servers group in Backup and Restore tab.
    Previous backup sets before changing the computer name can be restored by selecting the previous computer name. While performing the restore wizard, click ‘Browse’ button, then select the new computer name and a path in the 'Where do you want to restore?' screen.


2 Changing a Backup Exec Server name with Central Administration Server Option (CASO)

2.1 Changing a Central Admin Server (CAS) name

i. Remove all  Managed Backup Exec servers (MBES) from Storage tab.
ii. Follow the steps of Changing a Standalone Backup Exec Server name.
iii. Delete be_cat_blockSyncAndIndex.txt and be_cat_blockSyncToCAS.txt files if those exist in the catalogs folder.
    The following path is the catalog folder by default.
        o C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs (Backup Exec 15 or earlier)
        o C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalogs (Backup Exec 16 or later)
iv. Restart Backup Exec services.
iv. On each MBES, run the Install options and licenses program and join the new CAS.

2.2 Changing a Managed Backup Exec server (MBES) name
i. Remove the MBES from Storage tab.
ii. Follow Changing a Standalone Backup Exec Server name.
iii. Delete be_cat_blockSyncAndIndex.txt and be_cat_blockSyncToCAS.txt files if those exist in the catalogs folder.
    The following path is the catalog folder by default.
        o C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Catalogs (Backup Exec 15 or earlier)
        o C:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\Catalogs (Backup Exec 16 or later)
iv. On the MBES, run the Install options and licenses program and join CAS.

B) Changing a Remote Server name
i. Change the computer name of the operating system.
ii. Restart the server.
iii The new server name is automatically displayed in Backup and Restore tab by the publishing feature.
iv. Add the new server name if it is not displayed automatically.
v. Create backup jobs with the new computer name.
vi. When the client side deduplication is used with the remote server, restart Backup Exec services on the Backup Exec server.
vii. Hold or delete scheduled backup jobs with the previous computer name.
viii. (Optional) Move the previous computer name to Retired Servers group in Backup and Restore tab.
 
 
NOTE:  If you back up and then rename a Backup Exec media server, the new server name and the old server name both appear on the Backup and Restore tab. You should select the icon with the old server name to restore any data that you backed up before you changed the server name. You should select the icon with the new server name to restore any data that you backed up after you changed the server name.
