Improved password encryption for VCS users and agents
The Cluster Server component now uses the AES-256 algorithm to encrypt the Cluster Server user and the Cluster Server agent passwords by default, for enhanced security. The vcsencrypt.exe
utility and the hauser command generate passwords that are encrypted by using the standard AES-256 algorithm.
This change is backward compatible and does not affect any upgrade scenarios. Passwords that were configured earlier with the proprietary Veritas encryption algorithm are honoured. However, when a password for an existing user (in the non-secure mode) or an agent is changed, it is encrypted with the AES-256 algorithm.
This change impacts the usage of the vcwsilent.exe
utility, which requires an XML file as input that includes an encrypted user password. However, to run vcsencrypt.exe
, the Cluster Server engine needs to be configured and running. Thus, the utility can no longer be used to generate a password that is to be provided in the XML file. Therefore, a plain text password needs to be provided in the XML file for vcwsilent.exe
.
For details, refer to the Cluster Server Administrator's Guide.
