Problem

What is the maximum length of a Policy name created in the NetBackup Administration Console (jnbSA)?

Error Message

On UNIX systems:
The policy could not be added, status:220 Database system error

On Windows systems:
Name is too long

Solution

On UNIX systems, using   bppolicynew <policy-name> or adding a new policy through the VERITAS NetBackup (tm) JAVA Administration Console, the maximum length allowed for the policy name is 250 characters. Any value above that will cause an error:

The policy <policy_name> could not be added, status:220 Database system error

Note: When using the Remote Administration Console from a Windows system to access the NetBackup master server on a UNIX system, to add a new policy, the maximum length allowed for the policy name will be 128 characters. Any value above that will cause an error:

Name is too long

On Windows systems,  adding a new policy through the NetBackup Administration Console, the maximum length allowed for the policy name is 128 characters. Any value above that will cause an error:

Name is too long

In Windows systems, when adding new policy through bppolicynew <policy-name> , the maximum length allowed for the policy name is 199 characters. Any value above that will cause an error:

System call failed

Note: Even though you can add longer names via the command line on Windows Servers, any policy longer than 127 characters may not be editable or manually executable via the Windows NetBackup Administration Console.

Other guidelines for policy naming:

Use alphabetic (ASCII A-Z a-z), numeric (0-9), plus (+), minus (-), underscore(_), or period (.) characters. Do not use a minus or period (.) as the first or last character. Do not leave any spaces between characters. Do not use double/repeating special characters (ie.  ++, --, ..)
