Problem

Intelligent Monitoring Framework (IMF) aware agents in Symantec Cluster Server (VCS)

Solution

Intelligent Monitoring Framework (IMF) is an extension to the Symantec Cluster Server (VCS) agent framework. IMF allows the VCS agents to register the resources to be monitored with the IMF notification module so as to receive immediate notification of resource state changes without having to periodically poll the resources to find resource current state.

VCS monitors resources through agents, which are multi-threaded processes that provide the logic to manage resources. VCS has one agent per resource type. For example, a single IP agent manages all IP resources.

From VCS 5.1SP1 onwards, intelligent resource monitoring in addition to poll-based monitoring is supported which is disabled by default in VCS 5.1SP1 and its feature release patches (RP’s). From VCS 6.0, IMF is enabled by default.

The benefits of intelligent monitoring over poll-based monitoring are:

·          Faster notification of resource state changes.

·          Reduction in the VCS system utilization which enables VCS to effectively monitor a large number of resources.
