EVEARemovalUtility is unable to remove $KERNEL.PURGE extended attributes from files

Problem

The EVEARemovalUtility utility cannot remove extended attributes on a file that begins with $KERNEL.PURGE

Error Message

Example of the error reported in the FSA Archiving Task Report log:

8/15/2019 8:02:17 AM  \\server.domain.local\X$\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\SampleDocument‎.docx  73997    FSA Folder Policy Archive ALL          Archive ALL *.* ARCHIVE             *** Error *** - Error making file: \\?\UNC\server.domain.local\X$\Folder1\Folder2\Folder3\SampleDocument‎.docx  a placeholder file because it has extended attributes. Use EVEARemovalUtility to remove the extended attributes.

Cause

Enterprise Vault cannot create placeholders on files with extended attributes. EVEARemovalUtility was created to remove extended attributes from files to allow for placeholder creation. In the case of $KERNEL.PURGE.xxx attributes, the utility is unable to remove as they are created at a lower level then typical extended attributes.  

Solution

EVEARemovalUtility can be used to display the extended attribute on the file.  Once the attribute is found, it will be necessary to contact the software company that is creating the extended attribute on the file to determine if there is a way to remove it.
