Data corruption is observed for a Hyper V and VMware Virtual Machine backup that has dynamic, GPT disk having EFI and boot volume configured together
Severity
Data Loss HIGH
Description
Backup of a Virtual Machine with dynamic, GPT disk having EFI and boot volume together completes successfully without backing up the entire disk data. Job Monitor shows that the backup has completed successfully.
The restored virtual machine data would be incomplete. Customer may see failure during boot or data on volume would be incomplete.
Backup Exec performs disk optimization during the Virtual Machine (VM) backups. In this particular configuration Backup Exec was unable to capture all data blocks during the backup operation. This issue is seen for both GRT or Non-GRT backups of Virtual Machines configured in the above stated way.
If the Virtual Machine is configured without EFI partition then the backup works as expected.
Action Required
This issue is resolved in Backup Exec 21.2 R2 release.
Backup Exec 21.1 and earlier are affected by this Issue. It is recommended to perform a test restore if any of the Virtual Machine matches this configuration.
To avoid data loss situation, backup the concerned Virtual Machine using the Backup Exec Remote Agent.
Note: The affected Backup Sets for this scenario cannot be restored. Hence the workaround should be put in place as soon as possible.
