Product(s): Veritas Alta SaaS Protection
Description
Veritas Alta SaaS Protection's Continuous Data Protection (CDP) monitors file system directories and SharePoint to detect new and changed files in near real-time (within seconds). Changes are captured dynamically into Veritas Alta SaaS Protection to support backup scenarios with a very short recovery point objective (RPO) or for compliance use cases where a WORM archive is desirable.
Enabling CDP
Enabling CDP for a Files connector is configured by opening the Properties and choosing the
Advanced section on the
General tab.
It is not recommended to modify the Settings for CDP unless directed by Veritas Alta SaaS Protection.
Enabling CDP for a SharePoint connector is configured by opening the Properties and choosing the
Options
section on the
General
tab.
- Polling Interval (sec) -- The polling interval (in seconds) to retrieve the list of added/changed items from the Veritas Alta SaaS Protection web service. Default 120. Only change this when instructed by a Veritas Alta SaaS Protection representative.
- Page Size -- The number of results to get from the web service for each call. Default 10000. Only change this when instructed by a Veritas Alta SaaS Protection representative.
- Remove Remote Event Receivers on Next Crawl -- This option is used when disabling CDP. More info below on this topic.
Additional Notes when using CDP for SharePoint.
- When initially enabling CDP, it is required to run a connector crawl in order to create the necessary Remote Event Receivers (RER) I.e. when the regular crawl is run, each list gets the needed RERs created.
- To disable CDP for a SharePoint connector, perform the steps below:
- Stop active CDP. Deselect the ‘Continuous Data Protection’ option for the connector, and save that change. Allow the CDP task to stop.
- Optional removal of Remote Event Receivers. Enable the option ‘Remove Remote Event Receivers on Next Crawl’.
- Run a crawl which will remove the list. The ‘Remove Remote Event Receivers on Next Crawl’ will be automatically turned off once the next crawl completes.
Listener Type
CDP uses the Windows FileSystemWatcher to detect changes to files under the root folder or sub-folders of the Connector. Changes to files will trigger a crawl to occur after the '
Crawl Delay (sec)' settings. The default delay is 30 seconds and is not recommended to reduce. This delay allows the consolidation of file system changes to occur before kicking off a crawl.
When monitoring the
Continous Data Protection Tasks tab (as seen below), there are two items to note:
- #Locations Scanned will only populate folders in which a change has occurred and files captured.
- If the Connector Service has been stopped and started, a new crawl will be created.
Scheduling
Using CDP in conjunction with scheduling is essential as the File System Watcher does not guarantee that changes to watched files are returned. Scheduling a crawl allows the Connector to perform the initial crawl, and subsequent crawls will capture any file changes that may have been missed by the Windows File System Watcher. This is done on the '
Scheduling' Tab of the connector properties.
When enabled, the crawling icon will appear next to the Connector Name, and there will be an additional tab for the '
Continuous Data Protection Tasks'
showing the status of CDP.
Note: The 'Start Crawl' and 'Stop Crawl' buttons have no impact on CDP. Starting or Stopping is accomplished by enabling or disabling 'Continuous Data Protection'.
