Problem

ODM-linked Oracle 12.x database fails to start when reading a control file. Currently, this has been verified on Infoscale 7.4.1 and Oracle 12.1.0.2.0, but other releases may be affected.

Error Message

ALTER DATABASE MOUNT
Thu May 02 11:05:42 2019
ORA-00210: cannot open the specified control file
ORA-00202: control file: '/u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area/orcl/control02.ctl'
ORA-17502: ksfdcre:3 Failed to create file
ORA-205 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE MOUNT...

Cause

Oracle has confirmed that they have implemented some changes in the kernel that affect ODM.  .

Solution

Oracle have confirmed the root cause for this issue lies within the Oracle code line and a fix will be in a future SRU. As of publishing this is anticipated to be Oracle 11 SRU 8. The tracking id provided by Oracle for this issue is SR #3-20064803111

For now, the only workaround will be to downgrade FROM (or not upgrade TO) any 11.4.8 kernels.
