SQL database backup failing with status code 5449 after upgrade to NetBackup 8.1

Problem

For NetBackup MS-SQL policies that only list the SQL batch files, the backups that were previously completing successfully now fail with status 5449 after upgrading to NetBackup 8.1.

Cause

The script name listed in the policy's backup selection is not getting picked from the default path when the full path is not given. NetBackup 8.1 implemented changes that require the Backup Selection in the policy to be an absolute path.

Example

  • Backup Selections:
    1. <script_name>.bch ⇐ This backup fails with Status Code 5449.
    2. C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\DbExt\MsSql\<script_name>.bch ⇐ This backup completes successfully with Status Code 0.

Workaround

Modify the MS-SQL Policy's backup selection to include the full path of the backup script, whether using default or custom paths.
