Problem

A backup job for VMware virtual machine which has a thin provisioned virtual disk fails with error - 0xe0009582.

Error Message

Final error: 0xe0009582 - Cannot get the disk changed information

Cause

This issue occurs when all of the following conditions are met:

     - NTFS Used Sector Tracking Preferred registry value is set to 0.
     - A virtual machine has an additional thin provisioned virtual disk.
     - The above disk doesn't have a master boot record (MBR) which contains a partition table.
          ○ NOTE: Linux operating system can create filesystem directly on the entire disk without creating partition.

Solution

Perform the following steps to change NTFS Used Sector Tracking Preferred registry value to 1.

     1. On the Backup Exec server, launch Registry Editor with administrator privileges.
     2. Browse to the following registry key:
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\VMware Agent
     3. Double-click NTFS Used Sector Tracking Preferred registry value to modify.
     4. Change data from 0 to 1, and then click OK.
     5. Exit Registry Editor.
     6. Restart all Backup Exec services.
