Problem

Scenarios where a need to relocate the deduplication storage folder may arise -

1. Deduplication storage folder or deduplication disk storage device may run low on disk space and drive cannot be extended. In this case, the dedupe folder can be copied to a new larger drive ( with Deduplication services stopped in Backup Exec and then just giving the new drive the same drive letter ) on the same Backup Exec Server.

2. Some physical failure on the deduplication storage disk or server may create a need to relocate Backup Exec and the Deduplication Storage on a new server with a different name.

Solution

Scenario 1 - Relocating the Backup Exec Deduplication Storage to another Drive on the same server

1.
Disable and delete the Backup Exec Deduplication Storage folder from Backup Exec Console -> Storage Tab
Do not select the checkbox to "Delete the Backup Sets from Administration Console views after the device is successfully deleted" if relocating on the same BE server.

2. After the Deduplication Storage folder is deleted from Backup Exec UI and it is no longer visible, copy or move all Deduplication Storage folder from its original drive to the new drive where it is being relocated to. Ensure all folders and files are copied successfully.

3. After the Deduplication folder is copied to new drive, use the Backup Exec console to create a deduplication disk storage using the configure storage wizard but this time choose the option to reimport an existing deduplication disk storage device. If T is the new volume name, then type the path "T:\BackupExecDeduplicationStorageFolder" to reimport from this location. Ensure to use the correct credential ( dedupe user account ) during this reimport. The BE services will need a restart once the storage is reimported successfully.

4. Run an Inventory on the Deduplication Storage after the storage is successfully reimported from the new drive and BE services has restarted. Verify the Backup sets are visible and a couple of test restores to confirm all is fine. If the new Deduplication storage folder name is different than earlier one, the Backup Jobs may need to be edited and the new storage chosen again in Backup Jobs.

Note: Another method could be to disable dedupe from BE console. Then stop the deduplication services to be able to copy the storage on new drive which would have a different drive letter. After the Deduplication storage folder is copied, change the name of the old location deduplication drive and give the original Deduplication storage drive letter to the new drive where the Deduplication storage folder was copied. Then just start the Deduplication services and enable Deduplication storage.
Backup Exec Deduplication Storage content resides in this folder "BackupExecDeduplicationStorageFolder" so ensure that this entire folder is copied successfully.

Scenario 2 - Relocating just the Deduplication Storage folder to another Backup Exec Server

1. The BackupExecDeduplicationStorageFolder from original Backup Exec server has to be copied or made available on the Backup Exec server where it has to be relocated and imported.

2. The target Backup Exec Server should run the same version of Backup Exec as the source BE server to be able to easily reimport the storage. Ensure appropriate licenses are installed and no deduplication storage folder is configured on the target BE server before importing this storage.

3. Use the configure storage wizard to reimport the deduplication folder. During the reimport ensure to use the same username and password as was used with the same deduplication storage on the source BE server where it was online. After the reimport is completed, restart the BE services and when the storage is online run an Inventory and catalog to ensure all the backup sets show up in Backup Exec console for the resources whose backups was taken on this Deduplication storage folder.
