Problem

Cannot retrieve item. Report this error your system administrator. Object reference not set an instance of an object.

Error Message

When attempting to preview hits from an Enterprise Vault (EV) Discovery Accelerator (DA) search, the above error is displayed in the preview pane instead of the message.

The Enterprise Vault Event Log may also have the following error entry:

Solution

Ensure the Enterprise Vault Storage Service is running on the EV server that hosts the Vault Store containing the item.
  • If the Enterprise Vault Storage Service is not running, start it, then check the review page to see if the item can be previewed.
  • If the service is running, restart the Enterprise Vault Storage Service on the EV server to attempt to clear any stuck processes from memory, then check the review page to see if the item can be previewed.
  • If restarting the service does not resolve the issue, restart the EV server to clear any stuck processes from memory and to reregister in the EnterpriseVaultDirectory database.
