Problem

VMware Consolidated Backup fails with Status 156: No permission to perform this action.

Solution

VMwarevirtual machine backups fail with Status 156.  The following error isreported in the proxy server bpfis log:
08:39:19.046[752.4500] <2> onlfi_vfms_logf: [2008-09-02 08:38:52.564 'vcbMounter' 1576error] Error: No permission to perform this action.
This errorcan result from the incorrect username/password being provided to NetBackup forVirtual Machine Credentials or from the username being used not havingsufficient role assignment within VMWare to perform the requestedsnapshot.
Verify thecorrect username/password have been provided to NetBackup in the NetBackupAdministration Console under "Media and Device Management, Credentials, VirtualMachine Servers".
If theusername and password are correct review VMware documentation to verify theaccount used has the proper role assignment to perform snapshots. The followingVMware knowledge base article outlines the required permissions:
