Problem

Additional steps are required when utilizing Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTP). This document provides the necessary steps to configure EV to work with Exchange 2007 and Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTP). If not configured, the following error may return when attempting to access archived items externally.

Error Message

Cannot contact the web server. Try again later. Unknown error 0x80072EEF

Note: 0x80072EEF translates to ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT

Solution

Enterprise Vault supports the use of RPC over HTTP in Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 (Outlook Anywhere).  In order to utilize this functionality, additional settings are required to configure EV to specify the URL to the EV Server that Outlook Anywhere must use to connect.

Note: Assistance with configuring Firewall or ISA technology is outside the scope of Enterprise Vault Technical Support.  Please refer to a Firewall Administrator or ISA Administrator for further assistance.

Dependant on the internal requirements, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) may be required to encrypt the traffic to the Enterprise Vault server.  This may be carried out by using either an ISA/TMG server or it may be configured on the Enterprise Vault websites with IIS on the EV Server. Microsoft Technical Support might need to be engaged for further assistance with this configuration.

When using RPC over HTTP from an external client, any Enterprise Vault requests will use the following URLs in the following order.  When the first URL fails the second is used and this will (if configured and setup correctly) contact and complete the request to the EV Server.

  • DefaultWebAppURL (Configured in EV and by default will use an internal fully qualified domain name such as https://EVServer.Local/EnterpriseVault)

  • RPC over HTTP Proxy URL (Configured as alternate URL and held within the EV hidden message within Outlook)

  • Outlook URL configured for RPC over HTTP within Outlook.
