Problem

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) email notifications cannot be sent if McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is installed on the SMTP server.

Solution

Even after properly configuring SMTP notifications in VERITAS Backup Exec (tm), trouble may be encountered when attempting to send SMTP notifications.

If notifications are not being received, perform the preliminary steps of checking whether you are able to connect to port 25 of the SMTP server.
To test the SMTP connection, refer to the following article :   www.veritas.com/docs/000022472

If you are unable to connect to port 25 on the SMTP server, and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is installed on the SMTP server, perform the following steps to resolve the issue :

1. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.x blocks port 25 by default to prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail. To be able to send SMTP notifications using Backup Exec, port 25 should be open.

2. Open VirusScan Console of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.x .

3. Right-click on Access Protection and select Properties (Figure 1 & 2)

4. Clear the check box under Block under Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail option or click on edit and add  BESERVER.EXE in the exclusion list (Figure 3). Changing this options would not block port 25 and notifications can be sent successfully

Disclaimer :
If the Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail option is disabled, even though the SMTP notifications would be sent successfully, this may expose the server to mailing worms and viruses. Hence its advisable to add beserver.exe in the exclusion list rather than disabling  Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail option . The McAfee Knowledge base article describes the same [KB39684] :
