Frequently Asked Questions about LIMIT_BANDWIDTHSolution
- What jobs are affected by the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH parameter?
Bandwidth throttling is not supported for policy types AFS, DB2, FlashBackup, FlashBackup-Windows, Lotus-Notes, MS-SharePoint, MS-SQL-Server, NCR-Teradata, NDMP, SAP, Vault,VMware,Hyper-V and Enterprise-Vault.
Any Bandwidth limits configured within the Host Properties or by specifying the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH option in the bp.conf file will not apply to these types of backups.
- What is the default value for the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH parameter?
Bandwidth is unlimited by default (value = 0) .
- Can I exclude certain IP addresses from the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH IP range that I specified?
Yes. the following example will exclude client 192.168.1.10 from the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH setting :
LIMIT_BANDWIDTH = 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.20 5000
LIMIT_BANDWIDTH = 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.10 0
Alternatively, you can lower the limit for client 192.168.1.10 to 1000 KB/s by modifying the second line to:
LIMIT_BANDWIDTH = 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.10 1000
- Where is it set up?
Launch NetBackup Administration Console and go to Host Properties > Master Servers > double click the master server > go to Bandwidth.
- How do I know the bandwidth setting used for a particular backup?
Windows clients: Before launching the backup, make sure bpbkar log is enabled on the client. Once backup starts, open the bpbkar log and search for the following keyword: throttle_kbytes
UNIX/Linux clients: Simply run:/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpps
Take note of the throttle_kbytes value used by the bpbkar process.
- What is the minimum bandwidth value that can be assigned to the subnet?
1 KB/s.
- I created the following LIMIT_BANDWIDTH parameter, does it mean each client in the IP range get a dedicated bandwidth up to 500KB/s?
192.168.1.51 192.168.1.53 500
No. In this case, the 500 KB/s bandwidth is shared with 3 clients (192.168.1.51, 192.168.1.52 and 192.168.1.53). NetBackup dynamically adjusts the bandwidth limits on that subnet. Refer to related articles for additional information.
- I just modified the LIMIT_BANDWIDTH parameter on the master server, however the backup still takes the old value?
For immediate effect, you may need to restart NetBackup services on the master server.
