Problem

VMware Intelligent Policy are failing with "discovery document error (1001)" due to duplicate VM names in a VMware environment.  Base on the VM name selection used in the backup policy, NetBackup does not support duplicate VM names (hostname, display).

Error Message

Detailed status:

4/20/2012 9:29:16 AM - Error nbpem(pid=5720) Invalid discovery document D:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\bpsched.d\xmlfile.33860
Status 1001

nbpem:
Named groups 1 parameters do not match, from 192.168.99.100 to 192.168.99.100 (../DiscoveredData.cpp:987),21:DiscoveredItem::merge,1

Cause

As per the VMWare Admin Guide virtual machine host names or display names must be unique within a master server's policies. To back up the two virtual machines named VM1, do one of the following:

■ Change their VMware names so they are unique in the master server's policies.

■ Configure the policies to identify the virtual machines by their UUIDs. (Note that UUIDs are always unique.)

Solution

Remove the duplicate VM names from the NetBackup Domain.
