Optimized Deduplication duplicates full data between Data Domain LSU's

Problem

Veritas has become aware of an issue that may prevent Optimized Duplication (OpDup) jobs from working as desired between multiple Data Domain OST systems.  These jobs may actually be running as regular SetCopy aka duplicate jobs, which likely has lower performance and places a higher load on the Backup Exec server and network.

Error Message

None

Cause

Upgrades and fresh installations of Backup Exec 21 and above will migrate or set Windows Registry to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\

A fresh install of the DDBoost OST plugin expects:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\

The DDBoost installer will write the required registry entry that enables Optimized Deduplication under the Symantec key, which is no longer checked by Backup Exec.

Solution

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

On the Backup Exec Media Server, preform the following:

1. Click Start -> Run and type "regedit".  Click OK.

2. Within the registry editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup  Exec\Engine\Misc\

3. Check for the Registry Key - EnableOptimizedDuplicationDataDomain

4. If it does not exist, right click and add a new DWORD (32-bit) Value - EnableOptimizedDuplicationDataDomain

4. Modify the DWORD "EnableOptimizedDuplicationDataDomain" and set the value = 1

The fix will come from Data Domain/Dell for the DDBoost plugin installer.

To verify if OpDup is working between Data Domain storage server, please use the SGmon diagnostic tool.

How to use the SGMON utility to perform a live debug of Backup Exec

1. Under “Capture” in the ribbon, please select “Job Engine, Agent for Windows, Agent Browser”

2. Run a duplicate job that duplicates data between multiple Data Domain storage servers.

3. When the job is done, use CTRL-F in SGmon to search for “EnableOptDupeDataDomain”

4. The debug statements should represent the following: 

SetCopyJob::EnableOptDupeDataDomain() returning true

5. If the debug statement is not found , the job likely operated as a regular SetCopy aka duplicate job..
