Restore to CIFS shares fails with "Access denied. Error writing security data stream" to some directories and files.

Problem

Running a redirected restore of data backed up from a Windows NTFS file system to a CIFS share on a NAS device, will fail with "Access denied.  Error writing security data stream" on some files and directories.  Additionally this problem can exist restoring data back to the original location after the CIFS share or volume has been rebuilt.

Error Message

"Access denied.  Error writing security data stream"

The Backup Exec Remote Agent debug log (SERVERNAME-BEREMOTEXX.LOG) shows:

Compression reset failure 317

 

Cause

The CIFS share or folder permission are incorrect where the data is being restored to.

Solution

Workaround:

Run a restore job selecting "Restore all information except security for files and directories" under the "General" setting in the restore job properties.  This will get the data restored without the security settings for the file.
