Problem

Backup job hangs at approximately 95% with a status of "Updating History" when using Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR)

Solution

A backup job can potentially hang when updating the history due to corruption in the physical history files.
To resolve the issue perform the following steps:
(1) In Task Manager, stop VPROTRAY.EXE
(2) In Windows Services, stop the Backup Exec System Recovery service ( VPROSVC.EXE).
(3) Use Windows explorer to remove *.PQJ files located in the
For Windows 2003 & XP
X: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Schedule.
For Windows 2008 , 2008 R2 , Vista and Windows 7
X:\Program Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Schedule
(Where X:\ is the drive in which BESR is installed)
(4) Use Windows explorer to remove *.PQH files located in the
For Windows 2003 & XP
X:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\History.
For Windows 2008 , 2008 R2 , Vista and Windows 7
X:\Program Data\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\History
(Where X:\ is the drive in which BESR is installed)
(5) In Windows Services, start the Backup Exec System Recovery service ( VPROSVC.EXE).
(6) Use Windows explorer to start VPROTRAY.EXE located in the \Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Agent sub-folder.
(7) Start Backup Exec System Recovery and recreate the backup job.
*Note:  Since the history files were removed, the next backup performed will be a Base Recovery Point.
