Still riding the wave of energy from KubeCon North America 2023, I wanted to share insights from an insightful keynote by Chris Wiborg, Vice President, Product and Solutions Marketing at Veritas.

The short version: When it comes to data, there is some serious navigating to do.

Data Matters More than Ever

Let's cut to the chase: Data isn’t just a digital commodity; it's the lifeblood of our organizations. With the relentless cyberthreats, insider attacks, and the wrath of Mother Nature, ensuring the resilience of your data is more than just a good idea: It’s non-negotiable.

It’s like the modern-day gangs of New York, but in the cyber world. And cloud-native infrastructure is the new frontier. These bad actors aren’t just going after your applications. They’re using them to infiltrate more deeply into your digital universe.

Here’s a not-so-fun fact: As Chris shares, there are at least five easy ways to lose your data on Kubernetes:

  • Single copy risk
  • Lack of geographic distribution
  • Affinity misconfiguration
  • Mismanaged persistent volume
  • Accidental deletion

From putting all your resources in one place (read: single-copy risk) to mismanaged storage, it’s a maze out there.

The Starfish Principle: Resilience Is Key

Remember starfish? Those sea creatures that can regenerate even after being torn apart? That's our gold standard for data resilience. It's not about building higher walls. It's about making our data so resilient that even if a part gets hit, the whole doesn’t crumble.

DevOps revolutionized infrastructure management. It wasn’t just about tech, but a cultural shift. We need to bring that ethos to data management. Focus on creating synergy between people, processes, and tools, all geared toward making your data as resilient as a starfish.

In the fast-paced world of cloud-native computing, there’s a balancing act between maintaining speed and ensuring your data can take a hit and keep going. Let's not make headlines for the wrong reasons.

As we navigate the cloud-native world, let’s keep these insights as our compass, steering towards a future where our data is as resilient, adaptable, and regenerative as our friend, the starfish.
